Sometimes I’ve got a problem with a Photoshop window that gets under the toolbar on the top. It’s not a big problem. You just can’t quit, minimize or maximize the window, which is annoying.

Because by pressing ‘f’ you still can’t get it back in the original position. By accident I found an easy fix for this stupid problem. “Why does Adobe not fix this by not allowing the user to put windows under the toolbar. In Safari it isn’t possible either.”

The solution is to press CMD + R. This will show up the rulers and Photoshop will show the rulers as commanded, but also replace the window in it’s original position!

From the moment I switched from Windows to Mac I remembered how it changed my world. Not only was Mac OSX Leopard faster and better looking. It was so intuitive! In 2 days I worked on a Mac as I never worked on anther operating system before.
I was getting often irritated when I had to work on a Windows machine. It was like going back to the 90s. Not responsive and an unusual looking GUI. I know better know!

But to get back to the point why I’m writing this post. Even on the Mac there are things that could have been better. For quiet some time I’m wondering why everything is looking so nicely and minimal, but Safari is looking a bit cluttered at some parts. And is waisting a lot of space. Don’t get me started about IE or Firefox. Google Chrome is doing a good job as well.

For all the people who like it to ‘touch’ a product before reading about it. You can check the interactive demo down at the article!

Topbar

The topbar in Safari 4 consists out of a titlebar, url & Google bar, favorites and tabs (if tabs are in use). That are 4 layers with a height of 93 pixels. So on my mbp with a resolution of 1440 x 900 it would make a lot of difference when I didn’t had the topbar. When I maximize the Safari 4 window so it touches the topbar and the dock of the desktop, i will get a height of 820px. So if there was no topbar I would have 11,34% more space to view a website!

Solution:
The topbar only slides in when the user hovers with the mousepointer at the top of the window. When the mousepointer is not hovering on the topbar it will slide up, and so will the page. You can get the topbar back by entering the topbar zone from all sides. You can try it in the interactive demo.

Tabs

In the Safari 4 Beta the tabs were located in the title bar. Just like Google Chrome. I liked it because it safed space, but it was getting too cluttered. There were too much buttons now in the titlebar.
In the final version of Safari 4 the tabs got back at the normal place and made the topbar bigger again. But the tabs are still not very convenient. When you have multiple tabs the titles of the tabs are getting shortened and you still don’t know what tab you are going to open. Is there a more visually and faster way to open tabs?

Solution:
Now the topbar is not visible all the time, it would make sense if you can view all the tabs by an different action. Since I’m a Mac user I use Expose a lot to change from window or application. It’s lightning fast and visually pleasing. So I implented expose for Safari. The little thumbs of the websites makes the user switch faster from tab to tab. The Expose can be activated by hovering with the mousepointer in the left and right bottom corner of the Safari window. You can try it in the interactive demo.

Just a little add: When Expose is active and you press on the tabs, you will get back to the homepage. You won’t open the other pages. This interactive demo is just to give a better idea how it works.

Advantages for Safari 4 with these changes:

- More space for displaying the website.

- Browsing relaxed. Just focus on the website and not everything around the website.

- Faster changing of tabs

- The animations give the user more feedback of what happens

- Visually more pleasing

What kind of ideas do you have to make Safari 4 better?

Imagine you don’t have to move your mouse to the toolbar so often when you’re creating a document in Photoshop. Ofcoarse we have shortcuts, but shouldn’t a shortcut really be a shortcut? Just one button you have to press instead of the cmd key + ‘x’? Here’s iFast!

What does it do?

iFast is an application for the iPhone which makes working behind your beloved Mac a lot easier & faster. By placing the iPhone next to your keyboard or MacBook, -Pro or Air you’ll get an extention of your keyboard.
Only this keyboard is completely customizable so that you’ll have the shortcuts (with a maximum of 12) on the screen you use the most.

How does it work?

By the use of the internal bluetooth radio of the iPhone and a Mac computer there is a wireless connection which will send the shortcut commands to the computer.
iFast works for every application. Popular programs who depends on the use of shortcuts like the Adobe Creative Suite are already inside iFast. Other applications are easy to add to iFast, so you can have that smooth workflow you’ve always wished for!

Where can I buy this application?

Unfortunately this application doesn’t really excists. It’s just an idea for a really good application. I don’t have the skills to write a iPhone application, but if someone wants to build this application, don’t hesitate to contact me. We can probably work something out!

On january the 24th I went snorkling at The Great Barrier Reef at the coast of Cairns.
With the TUSA boat we visited 2 locations in The Great Barrier Reef. I hired an underwater camera to make some pictures of the most beautiful coral in the world. And yes. I’ve seen a shark. It was right in front of me and I was pretty scared so I haven’t made a good photo of it. But at photo 173 you can see the shark at the top.

After the Scenic Flight we went to the habitat of the Aboriginals. Watching paintings and climb rocks the aboriginals used a lookout.

The day after the scenic flight we took a river cruise in the yellow river. Bacause it’s wet season right now everything is flooded and spread out. So we didn’t see any wild crocodiles, but we will at the east coast! Although I didn’t see any crocodiles there was plenty of other beauties to photograph.

Next place will be Cairns at the East Coast. Pictures will follow as we travel back to Melbourne again.

Hello Mates!

First message from me in Australia. Today I’m in the Northern Territory; Darwin.
Tomorrow I will be flying to Cairns where the Great Barriere Reef is located.

But first things first. What have I seen in Kakadu?

Kakadu is a traingle with a lot of national parks. With a surface of 19,804 km2 , which is a lot

Our first stop was at The Bark Hut Inn. A inn that looks like a old deserted western town. But in the backgarden there were jumping wallabies. The first one we’ve seen, alive… The rooms of the Inn where little cabins with a colour that was used a lot in the 80s.

The next morning we went to Fogg Dam. A place where you can walk between wild animals. Packed with my camera bag I was ready to shoot some pictures of the Australian animals.

The next day we went to Kakadu National Park. We stayed in the Lakeview Park. A really great place to get some sleep in the jungle. After brushing teeth in our personal bath building and walking to the cabin giant bats flew next to you. The walls in the cabin were perforated for the flow. When sleeping you hear the screaming of animals attacked by others. Sound pretty eary, but it was vert comfortable

Next activity will be the scenic flight were I hope to take some nice pictures.
